YoungLives--Who Are We and What Do We Do?

Mission Statement

“In loving teens where they are, we hope to help them develop skills to be responsible moms by setting goals, teaching Boundaries and growing in Christ."

The History of YoungLives

In 1991, the Young Life committee of Tulare County, California, determined it needed to develop a special program for the thousands of teen moms in its area.  Former Young Life Area Director Dave Hanson hired Mary Somerville, a pastor's wife from California and former Young Life leader, to head up the new program targeting teen moms.  Thirteen women committed to one year of weekly meetings and were matched with teen moms.  This began the mentoring component of incarnational ministry to teen moms.  This organization was called Mentor Moms.  In 2001, the name was changed to YoungLives.  By 2008, the ministry of YoungLives had grown to more than 75 ministries.  It is now an international organization.

The Need For YoungLives

More than one million teenage girls become pregnant every year, and approximately 500,000 of them become young mothers.  This makes the YoungLives mission field one that is ripe for harvest.  Young Life's founder, Jim Rayburn, said, "All kids have the right to know the truth about Jesus Christ."

We believe that we have an incredible opportunity to have a generational impact not only on the lives of teen girls facing the challenges of parenthood but on their children as well.  YoungLives is a life-on-life ministry that allows us to come alongside teen moms and their babies to offer acceptance, counsel, friendship, hope and love.

Why do we do it?  Because teen moms have the right to know the unconditional love and acceptance that Jesus offers.

The Five C's of Young Life and its Role in YoungLives

Contact Work

Because kids don't care how much you know until they know how much you care, we show that we care by going where kids are, meeting them as they are, and believing in who they can be.  We mentor to teen moms one-on-one or in a group setting.

CLUB - A Party with a Purpose

We like to think of it as a party with a purpose. It’s controlled chaos that’s almost impossible to describe, but kids know it when they see it. And before the party ends, we share a simple message about God’s love for them. After all, that’s what the celebration is all about. Our club meets once a month.  Childcare and transportation are provided.

CAMP - The Best Week of Their Life

Kids consistently tell us that YoungLives camp is the best week of their life. That’s a rousing (and unsolicited) endorsement! But how else would you describe a week where deep relationships are forged in the midst of mind-boggling fun and where you experience and listen to what we believe is the greatest love story ever told?  Camp volunteers and staff provide childcare as needed.  We are always in the process of fundraising so that every girl who desires to go to camp can attend.

CAMPAGINERS - A Time to Question, Learn and Grow

Campaigners is a gathering for kids who wish to learn more or grow in their faith through study, service and leadership. We invite kids to actively follow Jesus Christ — and we’re with them for the long haul to help them take those steps of faith with unconditional love. Along the way, we encourage kids to celebrate their faith through participation in a local congregation.  Childcare and transportation are provided.

COMMITTEE - Adults Who Care

YoungLives is making a difference in the lives of kids around the world because we are supported by adults who care about kids in their community.
